Clean or Replace the Air Filter

A clogged air filter is the most common cause of weak airflow, poor cooling performance, and higher electricity bills. If you can't remember the last time you cleaned or replaced your filter, it's probably overdue. Clean reusable filters or replace disposable ones every 4–6 weeks during the peak cooling season to keep your AC running efficiently.

Check the Outdoor Unit

The outdoor condenser needs proper airflow to work efficiently. Remove any dust, leaves, dirt, or construction debris that has accumulated around the unit, and keep at least 30 cm (12 inches) of clear space on all sides. Restricted airflow forces the system to work harder, increasing energy consumption and reducing cooling performance.

Listen for Unusual Noises

Pay attention to any unusual sounds when your AC starts or runs. Rattling may indicate loose components, buzzing can point to electrical issues, and grinding noises often suggest worn bearings or compressor problems. Addressing these issues early can prevent costly repairs later.

Check the Cooling Performance

If your air conditioner is running but the air doesn't feel as cold as it used to, low refrigerant (commonly known as Freon) could be the cause. Refrigerant should never need frequent refilling, so low levels usually indicate a leak. Because handling refrigerant requires specialized equipment and certification, this is not a DIY repair—contact a licensed HVAC technician to diagnose and fix the problem.

When to Call a Professional

If you've completed the basic maintenance steps above and your AC still isn't cooling effectively, it's time to schedule a professional inspection. A proper diagnosis can identify the root cause before a minor issue turns into a major—and much more expensive—repair during the hottest months of the year.

Whether you need a routine service, refrigerant refill, or a complete AC repair, having your system inspected early will help restore performance, improve energy efficiency, and extend the life of your unit.
